Part 2

Describe a time you used your cellphone/smart phone to do something

important

You should say:

What happened

When it happened

How important the cellphone/smartphone was

And explain how you felt about the experience

Today's mobile phones are smart phones loaded with features which we often use for different purposes. I would like to talk about the incident when I used my phone to find my father’s lost mobile phone. Actually, almost a month ago my father went to the market to buy some groceries. But when he came back,he was pretty disappointed as he had lost his phone in the market. I, instantly, tried to call the number but there were no response despite several attempts. At the point, we understood it had gone into wrong hands. It was not only an expensive device but has a lot of important information such as contacts, messages, photos and others. When everyone lost hope, I decided to track the mobile. Actually my mobile phone has advanced features of tracking different devices. Within 5 minutes I found the location of the device.

I immediately visited the nearest police office station and reported what happened. The police officer accompanied me to the location and we successfully caught the thief and retrieved the mobile phone. My father was extremely delighted to get his mobile phone back and he felt proud of me about the way I handled the situation.

Part 3

1. What do you usually do with a cellphone?

2. What are the differences between young people and old people when using a cellphone?

3. Which one is more important, using a cellphone to make phone calls or to read messages?

4. Do you think there should be a law to stop people from making phone calls in public?

1. I use my cell phone on average 12 hours a day, not as a phone, but as a device for playing music and audio-books as I have a lot of them. I also use it for online shopping and searching for information on the Internet. As a matter of fact, I can’t live without a cellphone. I only wear clothes that have pockets, so unless my cell phone is charging, it is always in my hand or in my pocket.

2. In fact, the mobile phone has turned from a technological tool to a social tool. Youngsters utilize the cell phone to arrange and keep up their informal communities. Elderly individuals also use telephones to converse with others, read the news and take photographs. But I think younger people are more reliant on social media and they have more access to different social networking sites, while the elderly usually stick with one instant messaging service.

3. I think a lot of applications now have replaced the original functions of mobile phones, such as the two you mentioned. We can now use Wechat to make calls and send messages at the same time. If I have to choose one of these two functions, I think it is to make a phone call, because you usually need to contact the delivery person by phone for receiving express mails and takeaway food. At the same time, for some more important matters, many people still choose to call directly, because one can quickly get a reply.

4. I think the government should have something in place to deal with making phone calls in public. But the prohibition of phone use should not be applied to all public places; instead, when a phone call might affect others in a relatively closed space, such as in elevators, or on subways and buses, there should be some corresponding policies or regulations, such as fines and verbal warnings.
